A truly remarkable woman entrepreneur

Jami Arthur

by Patte Smith

Starting a business in your 50s is a scary thought for many people, and it was for Surrey Ridge resident Jami Arthur. Even so, her passion and positive outlook have taken her on a personal and professional journey from Australia to Boston, Arizona and Colorado.

Track the Tag is the name of Arthur’s new mobile marketing company that offers small businesses, advertisers, marketing and public relations firms – just to name a few – the capability of adding a new layer of communication or information to any printed piece.

Using a unique computer application, Track the Tag inserts an advanced color barcode about the size of a postage stamp (the tag) on printed advertisements, editorial pieces, posters, product packaging, direct
mail postcards, invitations, and business cards – anything that is in print. Then, using a smart phone (a phone with a camera and internet connection) the user waives the phone over the tag and another level of communication instantly pops up on the smart phone screen. It could be a video, a secret message, a discount or coupon, a slide show – anything digital. It is an interactive way for companies to create a fun experience for consumers, and results can be tracked of exactly how, when and where tags are being viewed.

“We work with our clients to define their communication goals and design a tag campaign for them – from the initial idea to managing the complete tag program, we take care of it all,” explains Jami. Jami’s focus is on helping small businesses compete during these tough economic times. “With this exciting new 21st century technology, we help companies get their message to the general public so they can get lead referrals or more business. Mobile marketing is the new way to connect,” emphasizes Jami.

“Starting a new business at this age has its challenges,” says Jami. “Getting my confidence back and learning how to pitch sales again has been a little nerve-wracking, but I keep a sense of humor and I always strive to be prepared. I also realize the importance of knowing my limitations so I develop alliances and find resources that compliment my weak points. And, I cannot emphasize enough how customer service can make or break a business.”

In her late 20s, Jami launched a successful computer component company in Australia with her husband and father. “It was hands-on learning experience. I had to cold-call on prospective clients, which was somewhat intimidating. I quickly realized that if I was upfront with my customers about my lack of technical expertise, they were more than happy to share their knowledge with me.”

Jami is self-educated and does not have an undergraduate degree, but she was accepted into the Harvard Graduate School of Business Owner/President Management Program (OPM). As a small business entrepreneur, she applied in the early 90s for this exclusive executive education program. She was one of 100 worldwide entrepreneurs selected to attend Harvard, and one of only seven women chosen to attend the prestigious university’s program. So off to Boston she went for three years.

After graduating from the OPM program, Jami moved to Arizona where she worked in a large corporate environment but gave that up to be a stay-at-home mom. She later moved to Colorado and became the vice president of business development for a popular sculpture magazine. Her family built a home in Surrey Ridge, sold it and then purchased another home in the same neighborhood. “We love Surrey Ridge and having the rural feel around us and yet being so close to downtown and the local shopping. It is great here.”

In August Jami will be addressing up to 500 sculptors participating in the Loveland Invitational Show and Sale and Sculpture in the Park. Her talk will focus on mobile marketing and communicating with 21st century technology.

A remarkable woman who views things in a very positive light, Jami has a passion for what she is doing, and she knows that is what it takes to be successful. She says in all her travels and business pursuits she has found out that “there is no one formula for success. Anything is possible if you have courage and determination.”
