Buffalo Ridge super spellers compete in the school’s spelling bee

In January, the Buffalo Ridge Elementary top spellers met twice a week to practice spelling all in preparation for the school’s spelling bee. Some the most trying words were dachshund and necessary. “It can be a confusing word,” commented one speller.

Grace Owens, fifth grader from Buffalo Ridge Elementary School (BRE) won the spelling bee when she correctly spelled the word “establishment”. The top spellers from the school spent the month of January honing their skills and learning the origin of common and not so common words, all in preparation for the Buffalo Ridge Spelling Bee.

In December 40 fourth and fifth graders sat for the qualifying written spelling. The top 16 spellers, Olivia Voss, Jaiden Boyle, Rebecca Teeter, Caden Scates, Christina Iverson, Grace Owens, Molly Steavpack, Mason Wiest, Avery Tisdale, Mercedes Gould, Megan Baer, Tyler Huebsch, Brynn Peters, Travis Bodell, Elizabeth Curtright and Xander Keriazakos competed January 25 in the spelling bee held in school’s gymnasium. As of press time the winner of the bee had not been determined.

“This is an exciting opportunity for all those great spellers out there,” said Felicia Phelan, BRE fifth grade teacher and spelling bee coordinator.

Along with the winners from other participating Douglas County Schools, BRE’s top speller will now attend the District Spelling Bee Wednesday, February 16 at Castle Rock Middle School.
