It’s time to pick it, run it and rock it!

By Lynne Marsala Basche

Choose the event, lace up those sneakers, and get moving in the 2nd annual Castle Rock Pick It! Run It! Rock It! Half Marathon.

On June 28, 600 runners are expected to dash their way through Castle Rock’s charming streets, scenic open spaces, and along the shady East Plum Creek Trail. If 13.1 miles seems daunting, there is a shorter five-mile race that follows the same course as the half marathon, but at only a fraction of the distance. If you crave a bigger adventure, the Rock Challenge is an intense run up and down Castle Rock’s historic monument and is a 10k option within the half marathon. It is the only race that is allowed to run to the summit in Rock Park.

All three events are professionally timed and the top finishers in each age category for all races receive gift certificates to Runners Roost. The top three overall male and female finishers receive a prepaid Visa card.

Proceeds from the race benefit the Castle Rock Parks and Recreation scholarship program, which assists local families in need who want to participate in recreational activities. Last year, more than $12,000 in scholarship money was distributed. In addition, a portion of the proceeds will be directed to Scouts for Wounded Veterans that benefits the Semper Fi Fund.

To learn more about the race and register, visit www.crgov.com and search for “Castle Rock Half Marathon.” Note that military service members receive a registration discount.

If you want to be a part of the festivities but cannot run, considering volunteering. The atmosphere is electric, and the community participation is rewarding. Volunteer opportunities include distributing race packets, helping with course set up, handing out water, and cheering runners along the route.

Visit www.volunteerconnectdc.org and look at the recently posted opportunities for additional information.”

As a community, pick it, run it and rock it for two excellent causes!
