Our Neighborhood Directory celebrates 25 years

In 1989, the Berlin Wall fell, Chinese students rallied and died for Democracy in Tiananmen Square, and “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” played incessantly on radios across America. In February of that same year, entrepreneur Tricia Anthone entered the Castle Pines community and began connecting neighbors and building relationships.  Twenty-five years later, Anthone is still going strong, and so is her brainchild, Our Neighborhood Directory.

A simple idea at heart, and heart at the center of this simple idea, Anthone created an alphabetical listing of the residents and a street index of neighbors. “By providing the community with its own private directory and keeping the distribution to the community itself, we offer residents a safer way to make their household contact information available to neighbors,” stated Anthone.

Over the years, the directory has grown to include digital editions, weblinks, and additional sections, including community organizations and resources, private clubs, committees, neighborhood helpers, resident-recommended service contractors, etc. – all from among the neighbors of the community.

Anthone says she’s learned during the past 25 years that while responding to what’s new, it’s important too, to remain mindful of what’s stayed the same for a long time. She says it keeps us focused on and responsive to the most constant aspects of human nature; the ones closest to the core.

Anthone reflected, “You know what’s funny about looking at longer stretches of time? It’s not so much how things change is how they simultaneously stay the same.  The names and the geography may be different today, but the news stories are similar.”

Anthone provides confidential, neighborhood-specific directories to many communities, including Castle Pines Village and Castle Pines (north). The directory is free and distribution of the hard-copy, printed book is limited to the neighborhood served and that community’s directory sponsors – each of which are carefully recruited and must be recommended by a resident of the community in order to advertise.

Anthone says she is often asked how a “quaint” idea like a hard-copy neighborhood directory continues to be popular in the digital era.  Her answer to that is this:  “No matter how immediately our technology allows us to connect, our inclination to do so will always be driven by our innate, hard-wired preference for faces we know.  As long as that remains the case, Our Neighborhood Directory, The Castle Pines Connection and other avenues for micro-market brand alignment will remain viable tools for maintaining vital physical presence in the homes of Castle Pines.”
