Following the geography of bliss to plant roots
The World Health Organization did a study that found that expatriate retirees live longer, healthier lives compared to their western counterparts. Erma and Bill Huston embody this notion; they traveled the globe for 30 years to find the secret to happiness and a fulfilling retirement.
“Follow your geography of bliss to plant roots,” said Bill.
As an Arizona State University alumni, Bill forged an impressive career right out of college. With a degree in construction management, Bill took his diploma globally, living in Saudi Arabia until he returned home to California. It was there that he crossed paths with the young and effervescent Erma. She was freshly transplanted from the Philippines to the United States, and Bill was smitten with Erma’s cheery, happy nature.
The two began a life and love story together that took them to Singapore for more than 13 years, then on to Morocco, the Philippines and eventually Thailand. They welcomed two daughters, Melissa and Erica, along the way, who filled up their own passports.
Melissa learned to speak Spanish fluently. She currently resides in Boston with her husband, Dan, and newborn son, Archer. They are planning a relocation to Littleton. Erica took years of Mandarin, attended CU-Boulder and resides in Broomfield with her husband Tyler.
Living abroad until September 2023, the globe trotters made their way back stateside to be near family because happiness is being home with their daughters. Officially retiring from the corporate world, the Hustons closed on a home in the Village. The two were vacationing in their Koh Samui home in Thailand until this May when Melissa gave birth to their first grandbaby, Archer. Planting their roots in Colorado became their new paradise.
The Hustons believe that “one’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.” Embarking on retirement, Bill is excited to take up skiing and Erma is looking to improve her golf game. For them, relationships always come first. They are excited to meet and get to know their neighbors and are hosting the Village Castle Pines Garden Club’s Wine in the Garden party, as well as neighborhood barbecues.
Most people search for happiness, hoping to find contentment. Erma and Bill are too busy being happy to think about happiness. For the Hustons, happiness is at the intersection of Equinox Drive and Glengarry Place in Castle Pines.
