Tie crafts for Father’s Day

Need a gift for the dad who has everything? Or looking for a way to honor and remember a special man in your life? Try these crafts to upcycle old ties into something new.

Tie wreath

Supplies: Two ties, metal ring, electric tape.

  1. Pick out two ties. They can be matching or contrasting but should be roughly the same width and length.
  2. Find a metal ring. They can be purchased at a craft store, or created using utility wire from a hardware store. Size can be flexible. The ring used here was about 12 inches in diameter.
  3. Beginning with the narrow end of the tie, line the angled edge of the tip along the ring and tape in place, wrapping the tape around the ring and tie three or four times.
  4. Continue wrapping the tie around the ring, until you are about halfway around. Tape the tie in place, again wrapping the tape around the ring and tie three or four times.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the other side with the second tie.
  6. Tie the two tie ends together in a bow. Arrange the bow to cover the tape at the bottom. A scrap of fabric or a flower can be used to cover the tape at the top.

Option: Use just one tie and a smaller ring and end with a traditional tie knot.

Glasses pouch

Supplies: One tie; needle and thread; small piece of Velcro or button and short length of narrow ribbon.

  1. Cut the tie in two, about two-and-a-half to three glasses length from the wide end of the tie.
  2. With the back of the tie facing up, fold over about one-half inch of the cut end of the tie and sew flat, creating a smooth edge.
  3. Fold the narrow end of the tie to the edge of the hole at the wide end and sew flat to the top layer. You now have a pouch.
  4. Add a closure using Velcro, or a button sewn to the top layer of the pouch and a loop of ribbon sewed to the point of the tie.

Option: Sew a few stiches through all layers in the bottom corners of the pouch to help hold the shape.
