Pre-prom traditions bring friends together

Gathering the morning of prom night has become its own tradition. Girls meet for brunch, spend the day together enjoying each other’s company, while taking photos in cute pajamas.
“The girls love it,” said Amber Ridge resident Marnie Blanco, mother of recent Rock Canyon High School graduate Gianna. “I think they like it more than the dance itself.”
In the kitchen, flowers cover the counters as the girls create their own bouquets using flowers, baby’s breath and greenery. The bouquets are meaningful props for the many photos taken on the big night. In many cases, these flowers are in addition to – and not instead of – corsages from their dates.
“Over the years, the bouquets have gotten smaller,” Marnie said with a laugh. “The girls used to make these huge bouquets. The smaller ones are easier to hold and look pretty in pictures.”
In the afternoon, the girls get ready for prom. Friends help each other with hair, jewelry and last-minute outfit decisions; all while moms steam dresses, offer advice and soak in the memories that come with prom season.
For a little while, pre-prom becomes less about the dance itself and more about bonding, making the day feel just as meaningful as the night.
“It’s become a tradition that these girls always get ready together,” Marnie said. “It’s been a good way for the moms to get to know each other, too.”

Friends spend prom morning enjoying brunch with their mothers, making flower bouquets and getting ready together at a friend’s house before the evening festivities.
